Joy, Sadness, Anger, the new emotion Anxiety, alongside more emotions, hit theatres this weekend in Disney Pixar’s “Inside Out 2″. The movie highlights girls’ youth hockey player Riley navigating new emotions. It’s a chance to focus on a youth sport many don’t talk about and youth hockey player Marissa Breaugh of the Michigan Girls Hockey League appeared on “Live in D” alongside a coach of the Michigan Girls Hockey League, Alexandra Yorks, to talk about their experience.
Yorks loves seeing girls’ youth hockey on the big screen. Growing up, girls’ hockey wasn’t really talked about around Yorks. In fact, she was also the only girl in her school who played hockey. The Michigan Girls Hockey League provides activities for the girls, skate programs, and hockey camps all to promote girls’ hockey around the state.
With new emotion Anxiety appearing in this film, Breaugh shared how she has overcome that emotion when she first hopped on the ice this season.
“My first game I felt nervous and then I went on the ice, and we won,” said Breaugh.
Yorks explained how girls’ hockey is a great outlet for girls as there are so many different emotions they are exposed to in the rink.
“I think its super important to give kids, especially girls, a safe place to experience those really big emotions like anger, and want, and even disappointment,” said Yorks.
Breaugh’s team the, Oakland Junior Grizzles, play inside Troy’s Buffalo Wild Wings Arena. The Michigan Girls Hockey League is expanding with a lot of local rinks now having girl programs available.
