Detroit takes center stage in a new movie about a young man who gets into the world of playing pool and soon finds out being good at the game can be lucrative and also dangerous.
Bloomfield Hills native Darren Weiss is the executive producer of the movie called “Break”, which includes footage that was shot in places like Berkley and Detroit. While watching the movie, you might spot familiar bus stops in Detroit.
Weiss also plays the role of Eli, the lead character in the movie. “He comes upon this pool hall sort of by accident and it’s the first time in his life he can sort of be who he is. And, these characters at this pool hall, these sorts of like misfit toys who have sort of gone through the same things in their lives, teach him to be who he is. It’s a place where you would least expect something like that to happen,” Weiss said while describing his character and the plot of the movie. “I think in ‘Break’ there’s a character that everyone can relate to, and I think that’s why so many people have enjoyed watching it so far,” he added.
To prepare for the role, Weiss said he had a professional pool coach for around three hours a day three days for three months.
