The Detroit Zoo has a cool new ‘Art’-traction

Program allows artist to feature his chalk art and educate guests

Next time you’re at the Detroit Zoo, you may come across something really cool and artsy. It’s all part of a program that’s allowing an artist to display his talents and message to others on a larger platform.

“We are excited that Nick is here. We are open and willing to work with everyone,” De’Andrea Matthews, Vice President of Diversity and Community Development at the Detroit Zoo said.

She’s talking about artist Nick Bair, who’s sketching chalk art of different animals this summer at the zoo. 30 year old Bair, who is a person with autism, has been drawing since a very young age. He uses his artwork as a way of bringing awareness, understanding, and acceptance to people who meet him.

Throughout the day while sketching, groups of spectators constantly form around him, and kids have many questions about the animal he’s drawing. Bair actually researches the animal he plans to draw, and is prepared to educate and answer any questions that may come his way.

He will be out sketching at different locations at the zoo every Wednesday through September 18th. If it rains, he will be there on Fridays.
