What you need to know about endometriosis

Here is important information from DMC on this common women’s health condition

Every year, women should visit their OB-GYN to review overall physical and mental health with their doctor and address specific concerns. One of the more common —and painful— concerns women can discuss is endometriosis.

Live in the D host, Tati Amare, spoke with Dr. Ethan Goldstein, an obstetrician gynecologist at the DMC to discuss symptoms and treatment options.

What is endometriosis?

  • Endometriosis is a condition where the endometrial cells get displaced outside the uterus. It affects about 10% of reproductive-age women.

What are some symptoms of endometriosis?

  • Dr. Goldstein said the most common symptom is pelvic pain, usually right before and during a woman’s menstrual cycle. Over time, if undiagnosed and treated, the pain can happen throughout the month.

How is endometriosis diagnosed?

  • Talking to your doctor about your health history.
  • Ultrasound.
  • MRI.

What are the treatment options for endometriosis?

  • Continuous birth control helps because it is a hormonal condition.
  • Over the counter pain medications.
  • Minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery.
  • The Davinci Robot is used at DMC for identifying and treating endometriosis.
