Are you ready to be a troop leader?

Getting started is quick and easy

The Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan is revving up and recruiting for a new year of experiences and growth with their organization. Many people have already formed troops in their communities, including Eric Dernay of Highland, who wanted to find something for his young daughters.

“One of the things we really sought out was connection to the community. We don’t really have a tie into the community in Highland here and we wanted to find a way to interact with the community more, especially with kids our kids age,” Dernay said.

Knowing of all the wonderful things the Girl Scouts does for the community and the experiences they provide for girls, he knew he wanted his family to be apart of the organization. He also saw a need for troop leaders. So, he volunteered to take on that role, something the organization says is strongly encouraged.

“We can not have troops without troop leaders and it’s a really important job to do, and you don’t have to be a parent to be a troop leader.” You can be a grandparent, aunt, uncle, a friend,” said Mary Beth Mills, Recruitment Specialist with Girls Scouts of Southeastern Michigan.

She said you just need to be at least 18 years old or older, and pass a background check. According to Mills, signing up is really easy and troop leaders can make their own schedules for meetings and activities with the girls and their families.
