When girl scouts and those associated with the organization hear “Gold Awards,” they know how much of a big deal they are.
The award is the highest award a senior or ambassador girl scout can earn. In 2024, 14 scouts were honored with the award, including Lizzie Cook, who also received the Young Woman of Distinction honor. She stopped by “Live in the D,” to chat about her huge accomplishment.
“I was in shock, I didn’t think it would be me,” Cook said when she learned she’d won the award.
The Girl Scouts must dedicate at least 80 hours to a project that creates sustainable solutions to a community issue or problem, in order to receive a gold award. Cook created a project called “create 4 focus,” that helps kids with ADHD through art therapy.
“I created a website called create 4 focus, and I uploaded YouTube videos on easy art tutorials that I did,” Cook said.
She also secured special funding for her project through a grant.
