Nutrition expert breaks down the collagen craze

Collagen is a vital protein in the body

You might have heard people talking about the collagen trend or even seen the supplements at the store, but what is collagen? Nutrition and fitness expert Jody Trierweiler appeared on “Live In The D” to explain.

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body, Trierweiler explained, She said 90% of your skin is made of collagen. “Think of it like a scaffolding. It holds the skin up,” Trierweiler said.

The collagen in your body declines as you age. “By the time you’re 60, you have only 50% of what you had in your twenties,” Trierweiler said.

However, there are ways to increase the collagen your body produces naturally. Trierweiler shared examples such as eating more vitamin C. She also talked about mushrooms and cashews, which are plentiful in the mineral copper. Other examples are eating oysters and pumpkin seeds, which contain zinc.

Some people also take collagen supplements. However, Trierweiler warned that the FDA does not regulate collagen and that too much can be negative.
