Detroit program offers math with a side of fitness

Local teacher merges 2 subjects into 1 fun class

We all know getting and keeping the attention of young kids isn’t always easy, especially in the classroom. One Detroit teacher found a way to keep her classroom interesting by merging two subjects.

“The class was very active and needed brain breaks,” teacher Dana McKissic said as she spoke about her experience while teaching a 4th grade math class a few years ago.

She said they all exercised during that “brain break,” which gave her the idea to incorporate exercising into her lesson. She said the students loved it and she saw an increase in their math skills. This method of teaching math and physical education was so successful, it turned into a business for McKissic call, “Get Math Fit.” Now a few years in, she teaches several classes and after school programs, with more to start up in the month of September.
