Make crate training comfortable for your dog

Expert gives advice on the best way to crate train

Any dog owner can tell you that it’s not easy to train a puppy, and one challenging part can be crate training. Although this can be a difficult decision to make for some, there are steps you can take to make sure your dog is comfortable in their space.

Lidia Vesterfelt from Michigan Humane stopped by “Live in the D” to give some tips on how to go about crate training. “One of the ways to make the crate a positive thing is to give the dog treats as you lead them in the crate,” Vesterfelt said. But, she added that you should not give them treats once they are in the crate. She gave the follow advice:

  • Never use the crate as punishment.
  • Don’t give your dog treats when misbehaving in the crate.
  • Have your dog spend time in the crate when home.

When and if you’re ready for a fur baby to bring home, Michigan Humane has several pets currently up for adoption like a 13 year old dog named “Lacie” who appeared on the show. The Mike Morse Law Firm will cover the standard adoption fee for anyone who adopts today’s pet of the week.
