Disaster Preparedness Month should include your pets

Michigan Humane offers advice in the event of an emergency

During Disaster Preparedness Month it’s crucial to ensure that you’re ready to care for your pets in case of an emergency. Lidia Vesterfelt from Michigan Humane shared some tips on “Live in the D” to help pet owners be prepared:

  1. Keep a designated bag of emergency supplies: Have a go-bag ready with everything your pet might need, such as food, water, medication, and comfort items.
  2. Stock two weeks of food and medication: Ensure you have enough supplies to last at least two weeks, including any special dietary needs or prescriptions your pet may require.
  3. Update medical records and microchip information: Keep a copy of your pet’s most recent medical history and make sure their microchip information is up to date in case you get separated.
  4. Research pet-friendly accommodations: Know in advance which hotels, shelters, or other accommodations in your area accept pets in case you need to evacuate.

Michigan Humane also introduced the Pet of the Week named Drake. He’s a four-month-old blind kitten who was found as a stray. Despite his blindness, Drake is playful and energetic. He would thrive in a home that is baby-proofed to ensure his safety, and he’s looking for a loving family to provide him with the safe environment he needs.

The Mike Morse Law Firm will cover the standard adoption fee for anyone who adopts today’s pet of the week.
