Get a sneak peek behind the Lions drone show

Drones will light up the sky over Ford Field Saturday night

The excitement over the Detroit Lions home opener is sky high, literally. The sky over Ford Field will light up Saturday night during a special Lions-themed drone show.

More than 400 drones will be taking part in the show, explained Matt Quinn, the owner and CEO of Great Lakes Drone Company, which runs Starlight Aerial Productions who is putting on the show.

You might wonder how a drone show like this comes to life. Quinn said the entire show is preprogrammed. Designers spent about 80 hours building the show, and the drones all have the location they’re going to be based on GPS, he said.

“It’s pixel art, so the further away you are, the better it actually looks in the sky,” Quinn said.

He said as long as you have a good view of the skyline over Comerica Park and Ford Field, you’ll be able to see it.
