Youth experiencing homelessness share their stories through art

Painted sneakers will be on display at ‘Art Prize’s

A unique entry will be featured at this year’s Art Prize in Grand Rapids, created by local youth who have experienced homelessness. The exhibit, titled “A Mile In Our Sneakers”, aims to foster a deeper understanding of youth homelessness through their personal stories, messages, and custom shoe designs.

One of the talented artists, Chleo, was pleasantly surprised when she was selected for the project.

“I just kind of came home one day and my art teacher was like right there and he was like, ‘Hey, do you want to paint these shoes for this art prize contest?’“she shared, reflecting on the unexpected opportunity.

Chleo’s design, inspired by the movie “Coraline”, is deeply personal and represents her journey.

“It was in relation to how I grew up personally,” she explained. Her artwork highlights the resilience and strength she’s developed from her experiences.

All the young participants have been supported by Covenant House Michigan; an organization dedicated to helping homeless youth.

Chleo is excited to showcase her creativity. She especially relates to the message in “Coraline” where the main character learns to appreciate what she has, even in challenging circumstances.
