Get a leg up on knee pain

The steps you take could lead to a better quality of life

Knee pain is something that many Americans are familiar with. In fact, 800,000 knee replacements are performed every year in the U.S. making it one of the most common elective surgeries. But, there are many misconceptions when it comes to the procedure and the results. Dr. Mark Mackey, Specialist-In-Chief of Orthopedics at The Detroit Medical Center, appeared on “Live In The D” to go through the facts of the procedure.

Dr. Mackey and host Tati Amare went through several True or False questions discussing knee replacement and results.

First, Dr. Mackey said it is false that knee replacement should only be considered for seniors. “Knee replacement has no absolute age restriction,” said Dr. Mackey. While most people are 50 to 80 years old when they have the procedure, total knee replacements have been performed successfully at all ages.

Second, Dr. Mackey said it is false to think that knee replacement is a short-term solution. He says studies currently show more than 90% of replacement knees continue to function 15 to 20 years after surgery.

Third, Dr. Mackey noted that it is true that more women than men are in need of knee replacement. He explained this is because of a condition called Osteoarthritis which occurs in women almost 3 1/2 times more often than men. “It’s the wear and tear of joint cartilage that covers the ends of our bones.“, said Mackey. “As that wears down, the knee will start becoming more painful and swollen.”

Finally, Dr. Mackey also pointed out that it is true that some knee replacements are minimally invasive. With advancements in robot-assisted surgeries, Dr. Mackey explained that most all patients are now considered candidates for a minimally invasive approach.

Dr. Mackey also went through a checklist to consider, if you think you are in need of knee replacement. You can click the video player above to see his advice.
