Fresh off their grand opening in late August, “Fixins” Soul Kitchen in Downtown Detroit is already a hit with customers. From Motown inspired décor, to downhome southern cooking, and a menu that pays homage to the owner’s family, the restaurant is finding success.
“Everything that we make, we make from scratch. Downhome recipes from Kevin Johnson’s family,” said John James, the Finance and Operations Manager for Fixins.
He’s talking about former NBA player, and former Mayor of Sacramento, Kevin Johnson. James said while in the league, Johnson would search for good soul food as he traveled, and aspired to one day open a soul food restaurant. After having success opening Fixins’ in other states, that journey brought him to Detroit, and picking the location was very intentional.
“Paradise Valley, which is now Harmonie Park, there’s a lot of history here,” James said. Paradise Valley once housed several prominent black owned businesses.
