Get wild about robots and create your own

Kids can learn to make and program something they make

Robots are famous in pop culture. From Rosie on “The Jetsons” to Wall-E from “Wall-E”, they are a fixture in storying telling that dates back decades. This weekend people can meet Roz in theaters when “The Wild Robot” premieres. The story is about a robot that’s ship wrecked on a deserted island and must follow its built-in protocol with only animals around.

When it comes to real life robots, there is a place in Birmingham that is teaching kids how to creating their own machine with programming and Lego bricks. It’s called The Robot Garage and Manager/Teacher Ellyn Yost appeared on “Live In The D” to share about their programs.

“We’re a small business that’s all about teaching robotics to kids,” said Yost. They have classes that start as young at 4 years and go all the way up to 8th grade. “It’s all about just having kids come in and have fun; being able to work on projects for those kids who maybe aren’t into sports or art or anything like that. It’s a good way for them to kind of explore something else.”

Yost shared three examples of robots they create at the garage that showcase various different programming tasks. To see the robots in action, click the video above.
