Benefits of adopting a senior pet

Don’t assume a puppy or a kitten is the best way to go

If you’re considering bringing a new pet into your home, a puppy or a kitten may come to mind. But, there are big benefits from adopting a senior pet. Michigan Humane Marketing Associate Lidia Vesterfelt sat down with “Live In The D” to share some of the advantages to bringing home an older pet.

First, she said you know what your going to get. Senior pets have set personalities, so there is no question as to how they will behave. On the other hand, with a puppy or a kitten, you don’t know their true behavior until they are grown.

Also, training is a significant part of bringing home a puppy or a kitten. You must train it things like appropriate bathroom practices, and appropriate behavior. Puppies and kittens are naturally playful and can be destructive during the earlier stage of life. With a senior pet, you‘ll get an animal that’s already trained.

Finally, Vesterfelt wanted people to know that “senior” doesn‘t mean sick. She said that if a pet is identified as a senior pet it means that it’s simply older than other pets typically up for adoption.

Vesterfelt also brought in a pet with her that‘s looking for a new home. Lazy Suzan is a domestic shorthair cat that wants a home where he can spend the rest of his years.
