This organization is warming hands and hearts in Detroit and beyond

Mittens for Detroit provides gloves and mittens for people of all ages

A nonprofit organization called Mittens for Detroit is warming hearts and hands, one pair of mittens at time.

Mittens for Detroit has provided more than a quarter million gloves to those in need around Detroit and surrounding cities since it began in 2010.

“All we do is collect, purchase, and distribute brand new pairs of mittens and gloves for everything from babies to senior citizens,” said Wendy Shepherd, the executive director of Mittens for Detroit.

Shepherd says providing warmth is critical, but the benefit goes beyond that.

“If they want to play outside outside on recess, it helps to have a pair of gloves. It helps them thrive in school. It helps them arrive at school with hands warm enough that they can hold a pen or pencil, that they can turn the pages in a book, they can play an instrument, they can type on a keyboard,” Shepherd said.

Mittens for Detroit is currently holding community sorting events and looking for volunteers to help get mittens and gloves prepared for distribution. You can find more information by visiting their website.
