Heart health advice for hypertension

This Detroit hospital offers a new treatment for high blood pressure

February is American Heart Month, a time to focus on things like heart disease and high blood pressure. You’ve probably heard of Hypertension which is another word for high blood pressure. There are ways to prevent it, and a new treatment option for it, but what exactly does it mean to have this?

“When there’s so much pressure on the arteries of your heart or your body, that its more than it can tolerate or take,” said Dr. Delair Gardi, Interventional Cardiologist at The Detroit Medical Center.

He said, on average, your blood pressure should be around 130 over 80 or less. Dr. Gardi also said, high blood pressure can sometimes be asymptomatic, which can be dangerous because you may not know you’re at risk.

Here’s a list of symptoms he said people should be aware of:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Blurred Vision
  • Sometimes Chest Pain

He said without treatment these symptoms can get worse.

There are ways he said you can manage high blood pressure like exercising, managing stress levels, retaining a healthy weight, having a low sodium diet, quit smoking, and limited or no alcohol.

In addition to managing, there are different treatment options for high blood pressure Dr. Gardi said, like medication, and exercising. The DMC also has a new treatment that is a non-evasive out patient option.
