New releases cover humor to heartbreak

A mental health based movie and a crime comedy hits theatres this weekend

Whether you’re looking for a movie to spark some emotions, or bring out a good laugh, these new releases give you an option. Movie reviewer Greg Russell joined “Live in the D” to talk over some new films.

“My Dead Friend Zoe” releases in theatres today and follows the story of an Afghanistan veteran and her deceased best friend. The movie has themes of PTSD, dark humor, and mental health.

“I thought it was interesting and good because there are a lot of times, we all have some problems or know people who have problems going on. Sometimes they don’t seek the help they really need. So, it’s all about reaching out to your friends, making sure everybody’s okay,” said Russell.

Greg rated it 4 out of 5 reels.

If you’re looking for a lighter film to watch this weekend, “Riff Raff” may be what you’re looking for. The movie is a crime comedy about a former criminal whose old family shows up for a reunion. The ensemble cast includes starts like Ed Harris, Jennifer Coolidge, and Gabrielle Union, among others.
