A clear vision of the future

A new eye institute in Metro Detroit is serving students and the community

The ability to see clearly is something many people need glasses or contacts for, which is why they get eye exams. Now, University of Detroit Mercy has a new Detroit Mercy Eye Institute in Novi where students are learning to help people see with the right prescription, and the community is getting chance to shop for new glasses.

“It goes back to our mission and caring for the needs of the entire individual,” said Sulman Hans, the Executive Associate Dean and Assistant to the Provost for Optometric Education. “We have a school of Dentistry, a College of Health Professions, and a School of Optometry is basically just an extension of our healthcare footprint in South East Michigan. It helps to serve the needs of the community with primary eye care being a definite need now.”

The Detroit Mercy Eye Institute is open to the public for purchasing new glasses and getting eye exams. After being open for nearly a year, Clinic Manager Krysta Mortoia said, “We try to keep everyone in mind when selecting our frame (options). So, we have many shapes sizes and brands. We try to keep everyone in mind with budget too, so we have low cost frames all the way up to designer frames.”

As for students, Hans says they get a “comprehensive training experience.” That includes strong clinical training with rotations across North America.
