Women’s History Month: Remembering a media trailblazer

Katharine Graham’s legacy continues living through Local 4

March is Women’s History Month. Here at WDIV Local 4, we’re celebrating the legacy of Katharine Graham. She’s a proud part of our legacy. The Graham family still has ownership of Graham Media Group, which proudly runs TV stations across the country -- Detroit (WDIV-TV), Houston (KPRC-TV), San Antonio (KSAT-TV), Jacksonville (WJXT-TV/WCWJ-TV), Roanoke (WSLS-TV) and Orlando (WKMG-TV), which got its call letters from Katharine herself.

She became publisher of the Washington Post in 1969. Two years later, she made the infamous decision to publish the classified Pentagon Papers, which focused on the U.S. involvement in Vietnam. She also supported the newspaper’s relentless reporting on the Watergate scandal, despite pressure from the Nixon administration.

Local 4 lifestyle editor Jon Jordan knew Katharine Graham, and reflects on her power, personality and style.
