Shelters seeing increase in newborn kittens

What to do if you find a stray kitten

As the weather gets warmer, shelters are seeing an increase in the number of newborn kittens. The kittens are often brought in without a mom and need to be bottle fed.

Lidia Vesterfelt is with Michigan Humane. She joined “Live In The D” to give some helpful tips if you happen to come across stray kittens.

“If you see kittens outside and they appear clean and healthy – and there’s no mom around – don’t grab them right away,” said Vesterfelt.

That’s because the kitten’s mother may be out looking for food – and can be away from her offspring for 6-8 hours. Vesterfelt says the best thing to do is wait it out and just keep an eye on the kitten. If the kitten appears dirty or injured, Vesterfelt recommends contacting a veterinarian or a cat rescue.
