This eastside Detroit restaurant is sparking nostalgia

A special discovery has become part of the concept

While the owners of “Detroit Soul” restaurant were in the process of building out their second location on East Jefferson, they made a pretty cool discovery.

“We noticed on the wall there was flavors of ice cream...we discovered this was the old Kresge location,” said co-owner Jerome Brown.

The Kresge he’s speaking of is the historic department store, which had a popular area - the ice cream, soda fountain counter. Instead of tossing away that history, they embraced it and made it part of the restaurant’s concept.

“Diners can have two different experiences here. They can dine in the dining room, then head over to the ice cream counter for dessert,” Brown said.

The restaurant offers a full soul food menu, and prides itself on making healthy dishes. They have a “carry out only” location at 2900 Eight Mile Road, in Detroit.
