April is Heartworm Awareness Month

Heartworm prevention is key

April is Heartworm Awareness Month, which is all about bringing attention to a disease that can be deadly if left untreated.

Lidia Vesterfelt with Michigan Humane appeared on “Live In The D” to share some important information to help keep your furry friends safe.

Lidia explained that both indoor and outdoor dogs and cats can contract heartworm through the bite of mosquitoes.

“You need to make sure that your pet is on a preventative. That’s the best line of defense against heartworm,” Lidia said.

Lidia explained that preventatives can come in a couple of different forms, such as an annual injection or a monthly oral preventative.

Michigan Humane also has multiple pets who need their forever home, including a dog named Gaston. Lidia described him as being a sweet and friendly dog who has a lot of energy. Watch the video above to meet Gaston.
