Art, creativity and a whole lot of nostalgia. That’s how a DIA exhibit by artist Tiff Massey is being described. Massey is making history, being the youngest artist to have a solo exhibit at the Detroit Institute of Arts, and this weekend is the last chance to experience the installation “7 Mile + Livernois.”
“Live in the D” host Tati Amare, caught up with Massey and took a tour of the exhibit. “You are going to see larger than life expressions of adornment… a lot of these objects are very personal to my childhood… it’s also bold in-your-face statements of how we in the diaspora like to adorn ourselves,“ Massey said.
In the exhibit, you’ll see life-sized earrings and hair barrettes, that not only spark childhood nostalgia for those who visit - they also honor black hair culture. Being from the 7 Mile and Livernois area on Detroit’s west side, Massey said the installation is also rooted in Detroit style. ”Coming from the avenue of fashion, everybody wants to come out and stunt - it’s just something that’s embedded in the water," Massey said.
The exhibit runs through May 11, 2025 at the Detroit Institute of Arts, in the Cultural Center area of Detroit.
