From stage plays to STEM event, plenty to do this Mother’s Day Weekend

Something for mom and the entire family happening in and around Detroit

It’s Mother’s Day Weekend and if you’re looking for something to do with mom - or the special person or friends in your life - there’s plenty to choose from.

First up, a musical about love, loss and transformation. “The Secret Garden,” presented by the Grosse Pointe Theatre tells the story of how a woman’s discovery of a long-forgotten garden sets her on a journey of physical and emotional healing after suffering a great loss. The powerful story also demonstrates the unbreakable bond of love. The stage play runs through Sunday at Parcells Schools auditorium in Grosse Pointe Woods.

Now to a different show that’s taking the stage. “Jurassic Park, the Musical” is being presented at Planet Ant Theatre in Hamtramck. The Dinosaurs talk and sign in this musical parody of the classic movie. The show runs through Sunday.

Spring is in effect, and if you need help growing a garden, the City of Farmington Hills just may be the place. The Beautification Commission is hosting a plant and seed swap event. Guests should come prepared with wagons, nursery pots to store new seedlings, and any plant or seeds they would like to bring for sharing. It’s happening Saturday 8:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. in the parking lot of the Farmington Hills Nature Center in Heritage Park.

The Downtown Boxing Gym will host a free Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Day for the next generation of innovators. The day will consist of hand-on STEM experiments like, Graphic Design, Robotics, E-V Tech, and more. The event happens Saturday 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.
