Nutrition expert: Not all ingredients in smoothies are healthy

Some ingredients contain more sugar and calories than you think

If you think you’re starting the day healthy with a smoothie, you might want to take a closer look at what’s going into the blender. Some ingredients sound good, but can pack in a lot more sugar and calories than you’d expect.

Fitness and Nutrition Expert Jody Trierweiler stopped by “Live in the D,” to share some common ingredient mistakes, and some smart swaps that can save you hundreds of calories and tons of sugar. “I want viewers to be able to order a smoothie from a smoothie shop and do a better job,” Trierweiler said.

She said this doesn’t pertain to people making smoothies at home, because you know what ingredients you put in. When ordering from a smoothie shop, however, she said you tend to just pick something from the menu - and even though the ingredients may be listed, you don’t always know how many calories the ingredient has.

“One banana typically has 20 grams of sugar,” Trierweiler said. To put it in perspective, she says the daily sugar intake for a woman should be 25 grams.
