Jimmy Hoffa left prison and plotted his comeback. The Mob had other ideas.

Hi Friend,

Hoffa was dead set on doing as little time as possible and figuring out a way to get back to his union, but his path back to the top ran through President Richard Nixon, Hoffa’s former right-hand man, Frank Fitzsimmons and some dangerous and powerful members of the mob.

Bribes, deals and fatal mistakes were made.

Historian and true crime expert Scott Burnstein says no punches were pulled and that “there’s the possibility, a very good possibility, that Hoffa was, in fact, trying to kill the Fitzsimmons. I mean, I don’t put that past Jimmy Hoffa that he was actually planting car bombs to try to blow up his enemies.”

Episodes 1-4 are now available wherever you listen to podcasts. Episode 5 -- which will be released on Tuesday -- will chronicle the day Hoffa disappeared.

Shattered+

More Shattered? But why? If you’re a student of the Hoffa saga, you’ll know the name Chuckie O’Brian. He was Hoffa’s “adopted” son.

To this day, many believe Chuckie picked Hoffa up from the Machus Red Fox restaurant and drove him to his assassination. In our 4th bonus episode we talk to Chuckie’s stepson, Jack Goldsmith, who recently wrote a book, “In Hoffa’s Shadow.” Goldsmith, who's now a Harvard professor, came into Chuckie's life when he was just 12 years-old.

He had become my father six weeks before Hoffa disappeared. I had actually grown very close to him in that short period. Soon after the Hoffa disappearance when he became one of the leading suspects, and as you know the Hoffa disappearance was a circus, a kind of news circus, and so he was front page news all the time. The whole thing put enormous pressure on him, obviously, which cause there to be enormous pressure on our family.

Goldsmith maintains Chuckie was not involved in Hoffa’s murder. Get the whole story by subscribing to Shattered plus today.
