WARREN, Mich. – Some neighbors in Warren saw a man walk out of his home covered in blood this past weekend after a bomb exploded.

Officials say that a 38-year-old Warren homeowner was taken to the hospital on Saturday after an explosive device he was handling reportedly went off in his home. The man lost one of his hands and suffered burns on more than half of his body. On top of that, his home -- located on Gentner Street near 8 Mile Road and Gratiot Avenue -- caught fire.

According to Warren police, the 38-year-old man -- whose identity has not been released -- has a lengthy criminal history, including 10 different arrests over the past eight years. Investigators reportedly found several other bombs inside the man’s home and a dozen guns and at least 4,000 rounds of ammunition. Officials say that there were enough explosives in the house that could have caused significant damage to the neighborhood.

“It’s crazy. I don’t know what he would be doing with all that ammo? It’s like he’s going to war or something,” said one of the neighbors.

Warren Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer says that the 38-year-old man was on a federal watch list and was being investigated by Warren Police Department’s special operations unit for months. The suspect was being investigated for felony crimes that could be linked to domestic terrorism.

“I don’t think the neighbors knew he was that dangerous, that they were living next to a time bomb that was just ready to go off,” said Dwyer. “It was arsenal that could have been fortified. We could’ve had major problems in the future.”

Neighbors express that they are happy that it happened the way that it did, and nobody else was hurt.

The homeowner remains hospitalized as of Monday morning.
