15 Mile Road reopens 347 days after massive sinkhole opened in Fraser

FRASER, Mich. – It’s been nearly a year since a massive sinkhole opened up in Fraser and closed 15 Mile Road.

Macomb County Public Works Commissioner Candice Miller drove a Ford Mustang through the opening ribbon Tuesday morning officially opening 15 Mile Road to traffic after 347 days.

The sinkhole opened up on Christmas Eve last year, forcing 22 homes on Eberlien Drive to be evacuated. Three homes were condemned.

The 11-foot diameter sewer interceptor collapsed, creating a 260-foot by 50-foot sinkhole, clocking access to homes on Eberlien Drive and causing massive damage to 15 Mile Road.

Miller was joined Tuesday by Macomb County Executive Mark Hackle, County Treasurer Larry Rocca, and Clinton Township Supervisor Bob Cannon.

“This day has been a long time coming,” Miller said. “It truly is a testament to the engineers, the engineers, the construction crews, and the finance team – just everyone who has been part of this team to bring us to this point.”

The $75 million repair of the 15 Mile Sewer collapse has been substantially completed, according to Miller. Some minor work remains at the site, including spreading grass seed and other finishing touches that need to wait until spring.
