16-year-old Detroit girl charged with stabbing newborn baby to death

Teen allegedly put baby's body in purse

DETROIT – Authorities say a 16-year-old girl stabbed her newborn baby to death earlier this year.

The girl has been charged as a juvenile with second-degree murder in connection with the stabbing.

According to officials, the teenager killed her baby after giving birth to it in a toilet in an apartment in the 9100 block of Agnes Street. First responders were called to the home Feb. 21 for a medical call, and the girl was taken to a hospital.

She allegedly stabbed the baby multiple times, put its body in a purse and hid it in a closet, where police found it the next day.

"I hope she didn't do that -- that's the honest to God truth," neighbor Jeffery Lemons said. "I can't believe this girl could do that."

A pretrial hearing is scheduled for Oct. 25 at 9 a.m. at the Juvenile Detention Center in Detroit.
