Men taken to hospital in serious condition, 1 dies

TAYLOR, Mich. – A Wayne County road worker died Thursday after he and another worker were hit by a county vehicle while patching potholes in Taylor, officials said.

The other worker remains in serious condition, officials said.

The worker who was killed is David Wolf, a 47-year-old man from Garden City. The injured worker is a 46-year-old man from Detroit.

"Today, a member of our Wayne County family perished in a tragic work accident, while another was seriously injured,"Wayne County Executive Warren Evans said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with their families as we grieve with them. This a terrible and sad day for Wayne County."

Officials said the crew was doing patch work on Van Born Road near Beech Daly Road. There were two Wayne County vehicles at the scene working in conjunction with one another.

The two workers were on foot around 11:20 a.m. Thursday when one of the vehicles hit them from behind. The vehicle was driven by a 48-year-old Lincoln Park resident.

The two men were taken to a hospital by Dearborn Heights firefighters. They are listed in serious condition.

"We have one patient that was critical, second patient was critical but stable on scene," said Tim Grapentine, Battalion Chief of the Taylor Fire Department. "Both patients were transported to Oakwood Main."

Grapentine said it appeared one of the men was pinned between the two county vehicles. The truck parked in front of the men was being driven by a 61-year-old from Belleville.

Taylor police are at the scene investigating the incident.
