Ecorse Fights To Keep Its McDonald's From Closing

Lone Site Is Set To Move To Redford

ECORSE, Mich. – Ecorse is leading a campaign to keep the city?s only McDonald?s from pulling up stakes.

The move, which has been the buzz of residents in recent weeks, is being ordered by McDonald?s regional office, according to the restaurant?s owner.

The move is to allow for larger space.

Determined not to lose the Golden Arches (which sit across the street from City Hall on Jefferson Avenue) Ecorse Emergency Manager Joyce A.

Parker and Ecorse City Councilman John Miller met with a regional representative and offered up four alternative sites in Ecorse.

But so far, McDonald?s officials haven?t backed off of their plans to shutter the site in Ecorse.

?The areas we gave them--- we felt they were real spacious,? said Councilman Miller. ?We?re trying to get them to stay.?

The owner has told Parker that he would just as soon keep his restaurant in Ecorse. But according to McDonald?s web site, decisions about locations are made through the regional office, which is located in Brighton, Michigan.

Councilman Miller first learned that the McDonald?s might be moving from a resident.

April Ackerman, 49, eats there often as the site is located a block from her office.

?We need restaurants here, and the kids need that in the neighborhood,? said Ackerman. ?We really need them to stay in Ecorse.?

Parker is asking that residents contact the regional office to voice their opposition. The office is located at 1021 Greimel Drive, Suite 200, Brighton, MI 48116 and can be reached at 734.335.9000, ext 9065.

?We are working to keep them here,? Parker said. ?We hope they will listen and find a way to remain in our city.?
