Monday marks 20th anniversary of Royal Oak Post Office rampage

5 killed in November 14, 1991 shooting

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – Monday marks the 20th anniversary of a deadly shooting rampage inside the Royal Oak Post Office.

On November 14, 1991 Thomas McIlvane, a recently fired worker, entered the building with a rifle and opened fire.

The deadly event ushered in the term 'going postal' .

McIlvane shot and killed four people before turning the gun on himself.

Among those killed: 33-year-old Christopher Carlisle of Rochester, 33-year-old Rose Marie Proos of Sterling Heights, 32-year-old Mary Benincasa of Clinton Township, 37-year-old Keith Ciszewski of Livonia

To mark the anniversary several current and former post office employees planned a memorial outside the building, but it was moved inside because some employees said they wanted to remember the moment privately.
