Fatal shooting of Detroit baby appears gang-related

9-month-old Delric Miller killed Monday by gunfire at home

DETROIT – A Detroit family is continuing to grapple with the loss of a 9-month-old baby boy.

Organizers of the group, Thou Shall Not Kill Motorcade, will hold a community gathering Wednesday in response to the baby's murder.

Delric Miller III was killed Monday morning when gunfire erupted into a house on the city's west side.

Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee said someone walked up to the house in the 8400 block of Greenview Avenue just after 4 a.m. and shot 37 bullets into the home with an assault rifle.

Family and friends gathered Monday night to hold a candlelight vigil.

Miller's mother, 19-year-old Diamond Salter, said she was inside the home with her two children and several other people when the bullets began tearing through the house.

"We were asleep. They started shooting and we ran to the basement," Salter said. "He was on the couch. I grabbed him when I ran to the basement. I thought he was alive. When I started feeling for him, he was dead."

Miller was hit by the spray of bullets. He was rushed to Sinai-Grace Hospital, but later died.

No one else was hurt.

"Who would do something like this? They knew it would be a bunch of kids in a house and come shoot up a house? It don't make no type of sense. I got to live without my son," Salter said.

Salter's mother, Cynthia Wilson, said Diamond's 4-year-old sister was killed by gunfire in 2001.

"Yeah, imagine my daughter and my grandson die the same way," Wilson said.

Visitation for Miller will be held at O. H. Pye III Funeral Home on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. A funeral is planned for Monday, February 27, at 12:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

No arrests have been made.

Police believe the shooting was gang-related.  Investigators are hoping to solve the shooting before it escalates into retaliation.

Wilson and Saulter both said they wanted police to catch the killer, but both added that they are committed to see that justice will be done.

"It's going to get handled," Wilson said.

"Either they're going to do their job or we're going to do our job," Saulter added.
