Kwame Kilpatrick ordered to pay more in restitution payments

Payments go from $160 to $500

DETROIT – Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has been ordered to make larger monthly payments towards his restitution to the city.

The Michigan Department of Corrections released the new conditions of Kilpatrick's restitution on Thursday.

He had previously been paying back $160 a month, but that has now been raised to $500.

The new payment goes into effect on April 1.

He's also been told he must complete 16 to 20 hours of community service each month and has to provide a complete accounting of his monthly expenses to his probation officer.

Kilpatrick pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice and resigned from office in 2008 after he lied at a civil trial to cover up an extramarital affair with his chief of staff, which was exposed through a series of graphic text messages. That lawsuit cost Detroit $8.4 million.

Kilpatrick was imprisoned in May 2010 for failing to disclose assets and surrender sufficient funds that could have reduced his $1 million restitution to Detroit. He was released Aug. 2, 2011, and has moved to Texas with his wife and three sons.

The new conditions are:
