Thief cuts through wall of Fanatic U store in Taylor to steal jerseys

Store owner says loss is about $36,000

TAYLOR, Mich. – A hot-handed burglar has gotten away with more $36,000 in jerseys and Detroit Tigers paraphernalia by cutting through the wall of Fanatic U in Taylor.

The crime happened overnight March 11 at the sports fan store on Allen Road. Police said it appears someone broke open a back door at a vacant tanning salon next door to the sports store and then cut through the wall.

"From what we gather, they took a crowbar and jimmied the lock here, pried it open, this door open," said store owner Greg Every.

Plywood now covers the hole that was cut in the drywall of a furnace room.

"The girl came here the next morning and at about 11 o'clock she goes, ‘Greg, there's a big hole next door to our thing and the Fielder jerseys are gone,'" Every said.

He said about 100 jerseys were taken.

"Opening Day, everyone's going to be going after Fielder," Every said.

Every said the store has motion detectors, but whoever was inside was able to dodge them.

Despite the stolen merchandise, Every said the store will still be able to cater to sports fans.

"We're ready for ‘em. Customers, don't fear, we've got plenty of stock and we'll be stocked through Opening Day. I bought plenty," he said.
