101-year-old gets to go home

Detroit resident was evicted

Detroit – 101-year-old Texana Hollis will finally get to go home. She was evicted from her Detroit home last fall after her son failed to pay property tax on a reverse mortgage. After hearing the story, award-winning writer Mitch Albom bought the home out of foreclosure. But the larger problem was the home's condition, deemed unsafe.

Saturday morning, volunteers from Albom's charity group, Time to Help, began the final phase of remodeling.

"She's got a new kitchen, new cabinets, new floors, and a new bathroom," said Albom. "She's going to get her house back better than it ever was before."

Since her eviction, Ms. Hollis has lived with long time family friend Polian Cheeks who said she will continue to care for Hollis. According to Albom, they hope to have Ms. Hollis back home within the next two weeks so she can celebrate her 102nd birthday in early April.
