Detroit family asking for help in solving son's murder

Family says, uncut weeds, no street light and slow EMS response contributing factors

DETROIT – Marshall McGrew says his 17-year-old son could still be alive today if he could have picked up his son and taken him to the hospital just minutes after he was shot four times.

"I'm scuffling with the police to get to him. They said, 'No, it's a crime scene.' And I said, 'F' the crime scene," a frustrated McGrew told Local 4.

The shooting happened late Wednesday night at the corner of Lauder and Joy road on the west side.

Marshall McGrew Jr. died at the hospital.

"When she told me that your son is dead, I was like, 'No he's not. He's not dead.' And I went into the room where he was at. But he wouldn't get off the table," the father said.

To complicate the case, the teen called his mother on his cell phone after being shot.

But he was laying in uncut weeds at the corner.

"She couldn't see him because the grass was too tall. She drove up and down the street and on the next block calling his name," adds McGrew.

Detroit police are working the case and one of the detectives is personal friends with the family.

But they have little to go on.

Witnesses say they saw two cars drive away after the shooting, but it was dark.

The only street light at that corner is out, like so many others in the city of Detroit.

Visitation for the teen is Friday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.

His funeral is Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Fisher Funeral Home in Redford.
