Belleville funeral home goes up in flames

Investigators say a grill may have sparked the fire at Brown Funeral Home

BELLEVILLE, Mich. – The owners of a funeral home are picking up the pieces after a fire burned down much of the building.

The fire happened Sunday afternoon at the apartment attached to Brown Funeral Home on the corner of Potter and E. Huron River Drive in Belleville.

According to firefighters, the fire broke out on the apartment balcony. Investigators believe the blaze started with a grill after the tenant walked away.

No one was inside the apartment or the funeral home at the time of the fire.

Two firefighters were treated for dehydration. Crews worked to control the fire, but the building was a complete loss.
