WESTLAND, Mich. – The city of Westland will have a new city hall in an old Circuit City store.
The Westland City Council this week approved a $1.6 million purchase of the former Circuit City building on Warren Road as the location of a new city hall.

The building, which has been empty since 2009, holds 64,000 square feet.
The current city hall on Ford Road, built in 1966, has 13,000 square feet.

City officials say the current building is undersized and has been plagued in recent years with basement flooding caused by soil erosion under the building .
The Circuit City building must now be retrofitted to be used as a city hall.
That project will be paid for with tax revenues from Westland's Tax Increment Finance Authority.
The Circuit City building is at the center of Westland's Shop and Dine District, adjacent to the Westland shopping mall.
