Detroit homicide rate jumps to highest level since 1994

375 homicides this year in Detroit as of Dec. 16

DETROIT – The number of homicides in the city of Detroit is at the highest point it has been since 1994.

As of Dec. 16 there were 375 homicides in the city during 2012. The numbers come straight from the Detroit Police Department's online statistics.

The spike comes at a time when Detroit is facing heavy financial woes. Police officers have endured pay cuts and longer hours.

The city's homicide rate is roughly 53 per 100,000 residents. That rate hasn't been this high since 1994 when it was roughly 54 homicides per 100,000 residents.
