Kwame Kilpatrick shows off tether in court

Ex-Detroit mayor now wearing tether for probation violation

DETROITOn Friday, Kwame Kilpatrick didn't leave the Detroit courthouse in his usual style.

Instead, he slid out of court and dodged cameras as he jumped into a waiting car and drove away. Perhaps the former Detroit mayor didn't want to take any extra questions about his new piece of jewelry: an ankle bracelet given to him by the Michigan Department of Corrections.

"As far as I'm concerned it's nothing but a distraction," said Kilpatrick's attorney, Jim Thomas.

Kilpatrick was put on a tether as punishment for failing to report a $2,000 gift this Christmas from a Chicago pastor. He is only allowed to go to court, meetings with attorneys, paid speaking engagements and his mother's house in Detroit, pending the outcome of an investigation.

"I can't tell you what his plans are," said Thomas.

Inside court on Friday, Kilpatrick showed off the tether laughing and saying, "this is what you all came to see." However, the extra weight around his ankle is heavier than it looks. It keeps him grounded in Detroit. There will be no trips home to Texas to see his wife and kids.

"My client's mindset has always been very positive. He's a very upbeat guy. He's a dynamic guy and he has been a pleasure to work with so far," said Thomas.
