Sal's twin brother and younger sister were also in the home but weren't hurt.
Sal, a student at Catholic Central High School, is hospitalized at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak.
The school's principal, Fr. John Huber, sent out a letter to parents saying Sal will have surgery on shunts in his head that are being affected by the meningitis. The shunts are from injuries he suffered in the beating.
Huber said Sal goes in and out of sleep but is "mentally aware" and able to answer questions.
"I promised Rose that all of us would pray for Sal, especially right now," Huber wrote.
