Rick Ross shooting: Was it staged?

Rapper 50 Cent calls out Rick Ross over drive-by shooting

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Police continue to look for the shooter who opened fire on rapper Rick Ross while some ask if the shooting was staged.

The shooting happened near Las Olas Boulevard and 15th Avenue about 5 a.m. Monday.

The Fort Lauderdale Police Department has released little information about the shooting. The Rolls Royce that Ross was driving dodged the spray of bullets from a car pulled up alongside, but slammed into an apartment building on 15th Avenue while trying to get away, say police.

No bullets hit Ross, his passenger, or the car, but they hit several cafes and boutiques along Las Olas.

"Yeah, bad shot," said veteran investigators Joe Matthews.

Matthews has supervised and conducted more than 1,000 homicide investigations during his 29 year police career.

"He may not know who the shooter is because he was paid, but he knows who's responsible," said Matthews.

Matthews said the shooter either pulled up alongside Ross or fired as he passed him. Ross was going eastbound at the time.

"There's windows blown out on the south side, there's windows blown out on the north side. What does that tell you?" asked Local 10 Crime Specialist John Turchin.

"What's more important than where the windows are blown out is where the casings were found," replied Matthews.

Most of the bullet casings appeared to be found near the intersection.

Rapper 50 Cent tweeted that he thought the shooting looked staged.

DJ Lorenzo "Ice T" Thomas of 99 Jamz said he didn't believe Ross would stage the shooting.

"What's on your mind at 5 o'clock in the morning? Are you thinking publicity stunt at 5 o'clock in the morning? Seriously, think about it," said Thomas. "No, you're not thinking -- and it's your birthday. You're thinking about getting in your birthday suit."

Ross is known for traveling with a security team. It's unclear if they were with him at the time of the shooting.

Ross has offered no comment on the incident.
