Detroit Metro Airport hub plan gets new name, CEO

Keyes is former economic director of Romulus, takes over starting July 1

ROMULUS, MI – A plan to transform land around Detroit Metropolitan Airport into a logistical hub has a new name and its first chief executive.

Tim Keyes was named Thursday as CEO of the effort now being called VantagePort. The original name of the initiative launched in 2009 was Aerotropolis.

An aerotropolis is a collection of transportation-dependent businesses that cluster around a major transit hub, such as an airport.

Cmmunities in southeast Michigan have talked for years about developing an aerotropolis around Metro Airport.

Keyes is the former economic director of Romulus. He takes over starting July 1.

He'll be in charge of the plan officials hope will attract tens of thousands of jobs and pump billions in investment into the region. His salary will be $125,000 a year, paid by taxpayers.
