The year-round option will run from the beginning of August until mid-June.
How it works:
Students attending the year-round option schools have the same number of school days and similar breaks as the traditional schools.
Intersessions, such as enrichment and remediation classes, are offered during the semester intervals.
Warren Consolidated Schools is the only district in Macomb County to offer the year-round educational option to its students, with the goal of improving student learning.
Families with children who attend Fillmore, Holden or Siersma were given the opportunity to continue their schooling at their home school under year-round option or move to a nearby sister school offering a traditional schedule.
Transportation is provided to children who chose to attend a sister school.
"The elementary school initiative is part of our district's dynamic 21st Century Strategic Plan that creates state-of-the-art programs, rigorous and relevant instructional practices and dynamic and flexible learning environments," Superintendent of Schools Dr. Robert D. Livernois said. "The year-round schedule supports a more flexible and balanced learning environment for students and also aligns with the district's strategic plan to prepare our 21st Century learners for a globally competitive world."
Chief Academic Officer Brian Walmsley said the district's Strategic Planning Committee began looking at different learning environment options nearly two years ago.
Walmsley said the committee members visited Lake Orion's year-round school and found that academic success had improved as a result of the modified schedule.
He attributes the success of the program to better learning retention, stemming from shorter time intervals between semesters.
Fillmore, Holden and Siersma were chosen as year-round option schools because of their diverse student body, geographic location, and ability to accommodate the changed schedule.
Each school feeds into one of the three Warren Consolidated Schools high schools.
"We held several meetings for parents at each of the three schools to explain the program and answer questions," Walmsley said. "We also held meetings for parents from the 12 other elementary schools and an on-line survey for families to express their opinions and ask questions."
