Detroit has a new assistant police chief

Eric Jones named to new position Friday

DETROIT – Detroit Police Chief James Craig on Friday named Eric Jones as his assistant police chief.

The announcement was made Friday. Jones' new role was effective immediately.

"As you can imagine, last night I didn't sleep well. Rather than stare at the ceiling, I decided to open up the FBI report. When I looked at the report, I was embarrassed. On the first page it had the top 25 most violent cities, and No. 25 was Philadelphia. Philadelphia has 1.5 million people and they had 331 homicides. We have 700,000 and we had 386," Jones said. "No more ... we're going to be in the top 10 most safe cities. Whoever wants to be part of that, this is the team."

Jones was previously an inspector with the Eastern District.

Jones says he wants to have better case handling, more attention to victims and overall less victimization.

Jones is now the second assistant police chief that the department has, Assistant Chief James White is already serving.
