DEARBORN, Mich. – Dearborn Fordson High School's junior varsity football team is the talk of the community.
But not for any good plays they made on the field.
"Everybody got their own kind of side of the story so you really can't know what happened in there," said Mike Jones, of Dearborn.
During a matchup between Fordson and West Bloomfield High School's J.V. football teams on Thursday at West Bloomfield, a fight broke out between two players on opposing teams.
When a referee stepped in to break up the fight, police say the Fordson player punched the ref in the face, knocking him to the ground.
The game was ended with just 5 minutes left on the clock in the 4th quarter.
The West Bloomfield School District says the coaches "handled the incident accordingly and quickly, and that this was an isolated incident involving just one student and no other players on the team."
A spokesperson for Dearborn Public Schools called it "a very unfortunate event that in no way reflects the attitude, behavior, or sportsmanship of Fordson athletes, the coaching staff, the school, or the district."
This former Fordson athlete with brothers at the school says what happened on the field doesn't surprise him.
"No, I am really not. It's sad to say but no I am really not," said Jones.
