DETROIT – For $2.8 million s 49-room mansion could be yours.
It sits along Woodward Avenue in Detroit and it was built by a wealthy family in 1889. The 125-year old mansion has been home to the Charfoos & Christensen law office since 1991.
John Peters, a partner in the firm, knows it's a work of art. For him it's bittersweet to have this historical home on the market after he spent so much time restoring the 21,000-square-foot house.
"Saying goodbye with deep regret. The has, through retirements and aging, shrunk, and the building is too big for us," he said.
Railroad tycoon Colonel Frank J. Hecker had this 2 and 1/2-story, French-inspired house built for his wife and five children back in 1889.
There were bedrooms for each family member. The couple did not share a bedroom.
The Heckers knew how to entertain with a ballroom on the first floor and a billiards room on the top floor.
"The house to build, originally, was $147,000. In today's money that would be about $14 million," said Peters.
Peters wants to make sure the next owner of this $2.8 million estate keeps this landmark in tact.
"Looking for a suitable owner, a suitable buyer, somebody who will commitment to maintaining it in its high-quality state of preservations," he said.
